Rooms

Four types and fifty-five rooms, no two quite the same

The iron columns and window openings went in during 1884 and haven't moved since, so the rooms come in four shapes, and the corner ones are the ones people ask for by name.

Corner guest room with a wide bed, pale linen, a potted palm and tall windows on two walls

Corner king

Keystone

Keystone sits at the corner of the building where the two street walls meet, so you get windows on two sides and light that moves across the room all day. The stone sill is wide enough to sit on with a cup of something, and the deep reveal keeps the afternoon sun off the bed.

The king bed can be split into twins if you ask when you book. There's a small table for two, and the bathroom has a bath as well as a shower. These rooms go first in March, when the festivals are on.

Laneway double

Hessian

Hessian faces Hessian Lane, where the carts used to back in. The window sits in a reveal half a metre deep, so the sun reaches the sill and stops. In February these are the coolest rooms in the building, and in June the darkest.

You get one double bed, a desk cut to fit the reveal, and a shower room with the original brick arch over the door (there's no bath). The lane carries service traffic only and goes quiet by nine.

Jarrah

Jarrah looks down into the old cart yard, now paving, two fig trees and the lap pool. The floorboards are the original jarrah, lifted, turned and relaid, and they give the room its name.

The room has a queen bed, a reading chair by the window and a bathroom with a window of its own. Swimmers start at six thirty in summer and the sound carries, so there are blockout curtains and a fan that runs quieter than the split system.

Top floor long room

Longspan

Longspan runs the full depth of the top floor between two iron columns, under the original trusses. It's a single long room with the bed at one end and a sofa, a table and a kitchenette at the other.

There are four of them. Each takes a cot or a rollaway without feeling crowded, and under the roof you hear the rain, which in Adelaide is a good reason to stay in.

In every room. Blockout curtains, a ceiling fan as well as reverse-cycle air, a kettle and a grinder on the bench, filtered water, an ironing board and a safe big enough for a laptop. The fridge holds nothing you have to pay for. Cots are free. Dogs stay in the ground floor rooms on the lane side, two per night, so tell us when you book.

Check in from 2 pm, out by 10.30 am

Reception is staffed from 6.30 am to 11 pm, with a night porter after that. Bags can sit behind the desk before and after your stay, and there's a shower off the pool if you have a late flight. If you're driving in, read the parking note first, because the lane is narrow and the loading door is not a car park.
