First floor

Adelvale Casino, the casino floor inside the bond store

One flight up the iron stair from the lobby, under the same stone ceiling as the rest of the building. It's part of the hotel and sits on the hotel's own premises, at the same address as the rooms.

Getting up there

Two ways from the lobby, both inside the building

You don't step outside to reach it. From the front desk, the iron stair is on your left past the end of Cellarman's; it turns once and arrives at the landing, and the casino is at the top. If stairs aren't for you, the lift is in the old loading bay behind reception, and the floor is marked 1.

  1. Come in from 31 Milverton Street, or through the loading door on Hessian Lane after 6 pm.
  2. Walk past reception and take the iron stair on the left, or the lift in the loading bay.
  3. On the first floor landing, the door is the one with the host standing beside it.
  4. Have your photo ID ready before you reach the door. It's checked on every visit, including the fourth night of your stay.

The room

A handful of tables and a bar, evenings only

The casino occupies one long room, the old first-floor storage hall, with the iron columns still running down the middle. It has space for a small number of live tables, and a bar along the north wall called the Ledger. You won't get lost in a casino this size, and the host will know your face by the second night.

Doors open at 6 pm and the last table closes at 2 am, Wednesday through Sunday; the floor is dark on Monday and Tuesday. Saturday is busiest between nine and midnight, and at six on a Wednesday it's close to empty, which suits some people.

What to wear

Dress neat and tidy, with closed shoes. Work boots, singlets and swimmers don't suit the floor, and neither does anything with the pool still on it. Shorts are fine in summer, because this is Adelaide and February is not negotiable. Caps come off at the tables.

Age and identification

The legal age for gambling in Australia is eighteen, and that applies here. Photo identification is checked at the door every time you come up, hotel guest or not. A driver licence, a passport or a South Australian proof of age card will do, but a room key won't.

Limits are set on the floor

The staff running the floor that night set the table limits, and these shift with who is on and how busy it is. Ask the host at the door or the dealer at the table before you sit down; people ask all the time.

Your own limits

Tell the host a time or an amount and they'll hold you to it, even if that means walking you to the stair after a bad run. You can also ask for a break, a quiet period, or to be kept off the floor for a set number of nights. All of it is arranged face to face, and none of it appears on your bill.

Stopping

Self-exclusion is arranged in person at reception

If you want to be kept off the casino floor, come down to reception and say so. A duty manager takes the request, you sign it at the desk, and from then on the door staff won't let you in for the period you set. It's confidential and kept with the duty manager instead of in your guest record, and your room, your meals and the rest of the hotel stay as they were.

The request has to come from the person concerned, so a travelling companion needs to come to the desk themselves; we can't take it second hand. This is handled at the desk by a person, which is why the website has no form or online sign-up for it.

No credit, no cash machine. You won't find a cash machine on the first floor or the landing. Nothing is advanced against a room account, and the Ledger bar doesn't run a tab that reaches the tables. When your money is gone, the stair goes down as easily as it goes up.

A land-based floor, with nothing to play on this website

This is a land-based casino room on the first floor of a hotel in Adelaide, and the website only describes it. It offers no online games or bets, takes no deposits or withdrawals, and accepts no payments of any kind. Accounts can't be opened here, and no money moves through these pages.

If you come across a page that appears to offer play in this hotel's name, it isn't ours. Everything takes place on the first floor, in person and during opening hours, with a member of staff in front of you.

Before you come up

Bring your identification in your hand and decide what you're prepared to lose before you sit down. If you'd like that decision enforced, tell the host. The casino closes at 2 am and nobody is hurried out before then. If the evening stops being enjoyable, stop: Cellarman's is directly below and the courtyard is open all night.

Our responsible gaming page lists what staff can arrange and how to ask for it.
